Взрыв на шахте номер 5 Угольной компании Централии в г. Централия, шт. Иллинойс, который 25 марта 1947 унес жизни 115 шахтеров. Компания давно была известна нарушениями техники безопасности, но эта катастрофа, самая страшная за 19 лет, произошла в условиях государственного контроля над эксплуатацией шахт. Четыре года спустя произошла еще более страшная авария на шахте г. Уэст-Франкфорт, шт. Иллинойс, где погибли 119 человек. Эти трагедии побудили Конгресс принять в 1952 Закон о безопасной эксплуатации шахт [Mine Safety Act of 1952]
